Hay fever is the common name for allergic rhinitis which affects around 18% of people in Australia and can affect general health, impair learning, increase time off work and reduce productivity. [1] Common symptoms include runny, itchy, congested nose, irritable, itchy, watery and red eyes, and itchy ears, throat and palate. [1] Allergens like pollen, dust mites, dust, animal fur, and mould can directly trigger allergic rhinitis and these can be present year round but tend to worsen in spring and summer. [2] These allergic reactions can also trigger asthma and worsen asthma management.
People with asthma have sensitive airways that become inflamed when exposed to allergens and triggers like pollen, dust, mould, cigarette smoke, physical activity, and others. This can lead to difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest.
For asthmatics with hay fever, our Pharmacists can help to support your asthma management.
